THUNDER FINISHES OFF DEL ORO; LOOKS FORWARD TO BOWL GAME
December 12, 2009
The Rocklin Thunder finished off a sensational 2009 season by claiming the Sac-Joaquin section Division II crown with a 21-14 victory over Sierra Foothill league rival Del Oro. It was a matchup between two physical football teams who both appeared to have fate on their side after wild playoff victories. Unfortunately, only one of these two fantastic football teams could be a champion, and once again it was the Thunder defense that came through in the clutch.
After probably the greatest and most memorable victory in Rocklin High School history last weekend, a 21-19 victory over the defending state champion Grant Pacers, the Rocklin Thunder finished off the last of their Sac-Joaquin section foes with another inspiring defensive performance.
Against the Grant Pacers last week, Rocklin took a 21-6 lead into the half. In the second half, however, the Pacers' legendary defense held the Thunder scoreless while mounting their comeback. Rocklin's offense never found the groove they had in the first half, and were held scoreless throughout the final two quarters. As the fourth quarter began, the Thunder held on to a 21-19 lead and knew that it would be up to the defense to stop Grant's relentless push. The defense came through with a miraculous four-play goalline stand to preserve the victory.
