DEL CAMPO RUINS INDERKUM'S PERFECT SEASON
December 12, 2009
The Inderkum Tigers must hate the Capital Athletic League and every team in it. Last year, the Tigers advanced to the section championship game only to get beat in overtime by the undefeated Casa Roble Rams, of the Capital Athletic League. Now it was the Del Campo Cougars, another Capital Athletic foe, who would ruin Inderkum's bid for a perfect season and a possible bowl appearance.
In the pouring rain and lightning that breifly forced both teams off of the field, the Del Campo Cougars took advantage of Inderkum mistakes to pull off the 16-12 upset. Inderkum's offense amassed 453 total yards of offense but turned the ball over three times in the red zone and a fourth time to end the game. Quarterback Demetrius Williams had a decent game, completing 8 of 20 passes for 177 yards and scoring on a quarterback sneak, but he was clearly outplayed by his Del Campo counterpart Ryan Dimino, who completed 7 of 12 passes for 135 yards and rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown. Inderkum's star running back Antonio Bumpers was held to 93 yards on 15 carries.

DEL CAMPO ROLLS IN D3 SEMI-FINALS
December 5, 2009
Del Campo 39, Sierra 10
On the first drive of the game, Sierra's deadly playmaker Jarrod Daniels broke free and dashed 65 yards to the end zone to give the Timberwolves the early 7-0 lead. It was a statement play, and it surely woke the Cougars up!
Del Campo, however, answered Daniels' statement with one of their own...a well-sustained drive that ended with seven points of their own on the board.
With the exception of Sierra's opening drive, the Cougars held Daniels, wide receiver Anthony Hall and the rest of Sierra's playmakers largely in check. The Cougars would allow just three more points in the entire game after Daniels' wake up call to the Del Campo defense. Stanford-bound defensive end Eddie Plantaric was dominant as usual, and Jaron Wilson and Ryan Dimino (65 yard INT return) were also huge for Cougars.
Offensively, it was once again the Ryan Dimino show for Del Campo. The senior quarterback threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 209 yards on 23 carries and scored the team's other four touchdowns on the ground. Del Campo will have their biggest test of the season against a juggernaut in Inderkum next week. The Division III Section Championship game should be every bit as good as last year's, when Casa Roble defeated Inderkum 27-21 in overtime. Both teams could be said to be looking for a bit of revenge. The Tigers against the entire Capital Athletic League, which has given them trouble in the playoffs, and Del Campo because they were knocked out of the playoffs last year by Inderkum the week before Casa Roble took the title from them. It should be a game for the ages!

AROUND THE LEAGUE...WEEK 7
October 25, 2009
♦ After a dramatic late fourth quarter loss to Casa Roble last week, the 5-1 Bella Vista Broncos survived a scare against Rio Americano in week seven, and although they are now 6-1, the Broncos appear to be in a little bit of trouble. The nature of their struggle is offensive, as their 14-13 victory over (2-5, 0-2) Rio Americano clearly shows. And the source of their offensive woes? The injured shoulder of star quarterback Branden Lang, who, out of their spread offense, is also the team's leading rusher. With Lang injured, the Broncos' offense struggled to produce in a game that they should have won easily. The Broncos have no time to get well before taking on El Camino (3-4, 0-2) next thursday but should survive thanks to one of the league's best defenses.
♦ The Casa Roble Rams left no doubt as to just how good they are with a 46-14 beating of El Camino. The Rams' defense held El Camino quarterback Quinn Peters largely in check and their offense did everything it wanted to do in the blowout win. The Rams will take on Mira Loma (5-2, 1-1) next week in a big league contest.
♦ In the biggest league game of week seven, the 5-1 Del Campo Cougars and 5-1 Mira Loma Matadors faced off. Del Campo held just a 7-6 lead going into the half in what was a very physical game. In the second half, however, the Cougars took care of business, wearing down the Mira Loma defense and finishing them off, winning 30-6.
AROUND THE LEAGUE...WEEK 5
October 14, 2009
♦ Bella Vista advanced to 5-0 with an easy 44-14 victory over Lathrop in week five, but despite the lopsided score the Broncos did not look the part of a championship caliber team. The Broncos made several mistakes and star QB Branden Lang was very inconsistent, throwing an interception and fumbling in the first half but also throwing a couple of perfect touchdown strikes. It seems as if the Broncos have taken what appeared to be one of the most potent offenses in the league and dumbed it down quite a bit over the past few weeks. Perhaps the Broncos are saving some of their more effective plays for league play, believing that the bare minimum would be sufficient to beat some of the weaker non-league foes they have played in the past few weeks. Well, we will see just how good the Broncos offense, and defense for that matter, is this weekend as the Broncos open up Capital Athletic League play against their bitter rivals Casa Roble.
♦ The Rams enter this week's huge league game against Bella Vista at 2-3, an inconceivable record for a team of their talent level. It has been a difficult non-league schedule and a couple of heart-breaking losses that have tainted the Rams' season up to this point (the Rams are literally two plays away from being 4-1 and a top ten ranked team), but with the beginning of league play Casa Roble should feel re-vitalized and re-united under the common goal of winning yet another Capital Athletic League title. It all begins this week with one of the biggest games of the season at Bella Vista (5-0). There are too many unknown factors here to pick a winner; the Broncos are 5-0 but have played a relatively easy non-league schedule while the 2-3 Rams have squared off with five tough teams already. There is no question, however, that this will be an exciting, passion-filled contest between bitter rivals. Last year the Rams poured it on the bewildered Broncos, running up the score late in the game.
♦ After a devastating 23-27 loss against Woodcreek in week four, the Del Campo Cougars responded by dominating a very good Pleasant Grove team last week and winning 20-7. This week, the Cougars defense, led by Eddie Plantaric and company, will be tasked with the job of slowing down QB Quinn Peters and the El Camino Eagles' high scoring offense. In the first three weeks of the season, El Camino was scoring at will and pulling out tight wins by outscoring opponents. However, in the past two weeks, Cosumnes Oaks and Yuba City both got victories by focusing on taking away the running of Quinn Peters, a blazing fast senior QB who has rushed for 675 yards and eight touchdowns thus far this season. Del Campo will likely have a spy to follow Peters around all game (probably Jaron Wilson or Ryan Dimino), so the Eagles will have to get some offense from somebody else. So far this season, nobody has stepped up and really filled that role as the team's complementary playmaker. Junior tailback James Washington (139 yards on 28 carries, 1 TD) is the second most explosive skill player on the team and must be utilized far more! If the Eagles could get Washington the ball in the open field, on say some quick passes to the flats, there is some big-play potential there. Multi-purpose back Myron Baldoz-Mcarn (15 car, 126 yards, 2 TD; 5 rec, 113 yards, 1 TD), WR Zachary Basten (14 rec, 172 yards), and WR Mike Sickle (7 rec, 97 yards, 1 TD; 6 car, 74 yards, 2 TD) are capable play-makers as well. Although Quinn Peters is a far better runner than he is a passer, the Eagles must look to incorporate a more adequate passing game to keep defenses on their heels...especially this week against a stingy Del Campo run defense. Although the Eagles certainly have the talent on offense to make this an interesting game, there is no way that they are going to be able to keep Del Campo out of the end zone. Expect a minimum of 42 points from the Cougars this week in another victory.
♦ Where has the Mira Loma Matadors come from? Not only are they playing some fantastic defense, but now the Matadors are scoring some serious points with one of the better passing attacks in the section. With the exception of their season opening loss to Mesa Verde, whom they would quite likely destroy if they played them now, the Mira Loma Matadors have been fantastic! Quarterback Alex Gomes is perhaps the best in the league and has thrown for 1,055 yards and eleven touchdowns already this season. Wide Receivers Kenna McCord (20 rec, 419 yards, 5 TDs) and Josiah Robinson (17 rec, 346 yards, 4 TDs) form a fantastic tandem of reliable targets for Gomes, and running back Desmond Smart (512 yards, 10 TDs) is explosive and tough to tackle. On both the offensive and defensive lines the Matadors are small but effective. Last week, against River Valley, the smaller Matadors controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball against a huge Falcons team. Defensively, the Matadors are as good as any tteam in the league. Artem Marchuk (10 sacks!) is a terror as a pass rusher and Nose tackle/full back A.J. Moore is a menace in the running game. The secondary and linebacking corps are small and athletic and as fundamentally sound as any unit in the league. This week, the Matadors will look to improve to 5-1 as they take on Rio Americano in their first league game.
THE CAPITAL GOES DOWN IN WEEK FOUR, BELLA VISTA LAST SURVIVOR
October 5, 2009
Heading into week four there were three undefeated teams left in the CAL, #9 Del Campo, Bella Vista and El Camino. Now only the Bella Vista Broncos remain. To make matters worse for the Capital Athletic League's reputation, the Casa Roble Rams (pride and joy of the league), were upset for the second straight week. In fact, one could say that the league suffered three embarassing upsets in addition to the brutal beatdown that Rio Americano received at the hands of Inderkum.
UPSET #1... #9 Del Campo 23, Woodcreek 27
I don't think that anybody saw this coming, but the thought did cross our minds that Del Campo was an untested team that could conceivably be overrated. At the same time, Woodcreek had been through hell in three straight weeks, losing to tough teams that they certainly could have beaten in Casa Roble, Placer and Bear River. The simple fact of the matter was that Del Campo was not as good as their 3-0 record made them seem and Woodcreek was a whole hell of a lot better than their 0-3 record made them seem. While only time will tell whether Del Campo is actually still the better team of the two, they certainly were not the better team on friday night. Woodcreek jumped out to a 6-0 lead on two first quarter field goals and were controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. However, Cougars coach Mike Dimino opened the offense up and let his son and star quarterback Ryan Dimino throw the rock. Dimino the younger was very efficient all night, hitting on 17 of 23 passes for 285 yards and throwing three touchdowns, all of them to receiver Orlando Ortiz. After his third and final touchdown pass, early in the fourth quarter, the Cougars had a commanding ten point, 23-13 lead. Battle tested and hungry, however, the Woodcreek Timberwolves had nothing to lose, and left everything that they had on the field. While the Cougars were trying to preserve the win (i.e. playing not to lose), the Timberwolves were hitting the Cougars with everything they had. The hero of the night was not star running back James Nunley, who did in fact shred the Cougars too, but fullback Dimitri Cardenas, whose two fourth quarter touchdowns stole the Wolves a victory right out of the jaws of a fourth defeat!
The Del Campo Cougars have no time to feel sorry for themselves and pout, for next week they face #11 Pleasant Grove at home. A win next week will totally erase the sting of this week's loss and get the Cougars' season back on track. Del Campo is still a good team and this tough week four loss will only help them in the long run. In the same way that Woodcreek was toughened up by early season setbacks to the point where they could perservere and beat the Cougars, so too will the Cougars get something of value from a tough loss.
UPSET #2... #18 CASA ROBLE 21, OAK RIDGE 23
The Rams are in deep deep trouble after suffering their second straight heartbreaking loss. Last week a two point conversion pass attempt from Justin Tann to DJ Muses failed and the Rams lost to Placer 30-31. This week, the Rams squandered an early 14-0 lead over the Oak Ridge Trojans and lost on a controversial call late in the game.
The Rams took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter when Justin Tann hit Tommy Crosbie from 14 yards out. Although the Rams defense had largely been dominating up to that point, Oak Ridge managed to answer with a long drive that culminated in a nine yard touchdown pass from Conner Benander to Tommy Massa, cutting the Rams lead in half. After a defensive stop, Oak Ridge cut the lead down to four with a field goal to end the half.
After a scoreless third quarter the Trojans upped the stakes by taking their first lead of the game on Jacob Allen's two yard touchdown run. Casa Roble would answer with Anthony Santiago's second touchdown run of the game, setting the stage for another fantastic finish. In a controversial call, Conner Benander's one yard quarterback sneak as time expired was initially ruled as short. After several moments, the referees ruled in favor of Benander and the Trojans, giving them the touchdown and the 23-21 win, their first of the 2009 season.
After two heartbreaking losses the Rams find themselves at 2-2 and likely to be 2-3 after next week's game against powerhouse Folsom. Still, this is a Rams team that, had just two plays gone their way, could be 4-0, ranked in the top ten and heading into a monster matchup with Folsom. Like the Del Campo Cougars, however, Casa Roble is now a battle tested team toughened up by devastating losses. They have plenty of time to get their act together before the play-offs, but if they want to win another league championship they must get it together right now! After playing Folsom, the Rams have to take on the Bella Vista Broncos, who are atop the league at 4-0 after a 48-20 win over Antelope.
UPSET #3... EL CAMINO 7, COSUMNES OAKS 25
Okay so this one might not actually be an upset, but the records coming into the week would certainly seem to suggest as much. The El Camino Eagles were 3-0 and Cosumnes Oaks, a new school struggling to establish their program, sat at 1-2. However, anyone could see that the El Camino Eagles were due for a hard fall, but we didn't think it would come at the hands of Cosumnes Oaks.
Their offense had been extremely one dimensional, basically depending upon quarterback Quinn Peters for just about every single offensive yard. The senior quarterback almost single-handedly beat Kennedy and Woodland, so Cosumnes Oaks' plan was to take him out of the game and force somebody else to beat them...nobody did. The Cosumnes defense shut out the high powered Eagles offense, as El Camino's only score came on a 75 yard Mike Sickle kickoff return. Hats off to the Cosumnes Oaks defense, who with standout players like Ahmad Malik, Alonzo Johnson, Andrew Arrietta and Jordan Session leading the way, have gotten better and better every week and look to have a bright six weeks ahead of them.
El Camino has another tough game next week against the Yuba City Honkers before getting into a league schedule that will be brutal.
The Bella Vista Broncos and Mira Loma Matadors were the lone bright spots for the CAL this week. The Broncos improved to 4-0 after waxing Antelope 48-20 and have the look of a championship contender. Meanwhile, Mira Loma is turning some heads with a ferocious defense and servicable offense. This week they beat River City 42-14 this week. This thursday, the Matadors have a nice challenge when River Valley (2-2) of Yuba City comes to town. The Broncos should be 5-0 after hosting Lathrop this friday, a struggling new team with no seniors to lead them.
AROUND THE LEAGUE: AFTER THREE WEEKS, CAPITAL ATHLETIC STILL HAS THREE UNDEFEATED TEAMS
September 27, 2009
When it comes to the strength of various leagues, the Capital Athletic would have to be ranked pretty high, especially against other Division III leagues. After three and a half weeks of play, Del Campo (3-0), Bella Vista (3-0), and El Camino (3-0) are all still undefeated. Casa Roble is still one of Sacramento's best squads despite the 30-31 heartbreaking loss to a very good Placer (3-0) team this weekend. Meanwhile Mira Loma, a team that nobody expected a whole lot from this year, has ripped off two consecutive wins and sits at 2-1. Their defense has been impressive, allowing just 30 points in three games and giving up an average of just under 170 total yards per game. The lone disappointment this year seems to be Rio Americano, a playoff team last season. Hit by the loss of several key players, the Raiders look nothing like the squad that went 8-2 in the regular season a year ago. They were defeated 26-13 by River Valley of Yuba City this weekend in a game that they certainly could have won had it not been for the three interceptions by Colin Gault of Rio QB Gavin Marsh, one of which went back 84 yards for a touchdown.
All in all this league is pretty darn good and the various battles that will impact league standings and crown a league champion should be both tough and exciting. Looking ahead at the schedules, it is not impossible for Del Campo, Bella Vista and El Camino to go into league games still undefeated, and if Mira Loma continues to play so well defensively they could be 4-1 heading into league play.
Del Campo should be able to beat Woodcreek next week, although with James Nunley on the field anything can happen. Week five will be the Cougars' big non-league test, as they face the Pleasant Grove Eagles (2-1).
El Camino has to go on the road and get a pair of wins if they want to be 5-0 heading into league play. Next week the Eagles head out south to take on Cosumnes Oaks (1-2). El Camino should be able to win that game, provided that they can slow Cosumnes down enough. The Eagles' defense has been porous to say the least, although Cosumnes Oaks has not exactly been a high powered offense (205 total yards per game, 40 points in three games). The scarier game for El Camino will be week five against Yuba City (1-2), a team that lost 12-33 this weekend to Bella Vista. Yuba City has an offense that can and will score points against El Camino and a defense that, although allowing many yards and points in two of three games this year, is definitely capable of making big plays. After winning their first three games by scores of 44-37, 35-28, and 30-29, the El Camino Eagles are beginning to look like this year's cardiac kids. Look for week five against Yuba City to be another nail-biter, with victory going to the squad that makes the fewest mistakes!
Looking at Bella Vista's schedule, it appears that the Broncos should cruise on into league play at 5-0. They face an Antelope team this week that sits at 2-1, but the Broncos are definitely the superior team and should be able to score a bunch of points with stud QB Branden Lang at the helm. Week five the Broncos play Lathrop, a new school that still doesn't have any seniors. So, barring a total catastrophy of injuries, the Broncos should be 5-0 heading into their week six monster matchup with bitter rival Casa Roble. Should they win that game, well...if they are good enough to beat Casa Roble then the Broncos are destined to be 9-0 when they play Del Campo for the league championship and would be, at worst, a dangerous 9-1 playoff team.
And what about those Mira Loma Matadors? Picked to finish dead last again in the Capital Athletic, Mira Loma has come out and established themselves as a legitimate threat. They have been especially impressive on defense, in having allowed no more than 14 points in a game this year and giving up just 6 and 10 in their two wins, respectively. If the Matadors play good smart football next week, then they should emerge victorious over River City. In week five, however, Mira Loma has a tough matchup against River Valley, the same team that beat fellow Capital Athletic team Rio Americano 26-13 this week. Although it would be a tough one, the Matadors are certainly capable of beating River Valley too. If the Matadors get things done and win their next two games, then they will enter league play with a 4-1 record and will have the momentum to be a threat.
The Casa Roble Rams have a truly murderous schedule, facing Oak Ridge next week and Folsom in week five on top of an obviously strong league schedule. The Rams can certainly beat Oak Ridge next week if their defense gets to playing the way they did in the first two games. However, beating the Folsom Bulldogs in week five does not seem likely, considering that Folsom has annihilated everybody who has dared to play them thus far this season.
-Justin Cruise
ANOTHER OUTSTANDING INTERLEAGUE SHOWING: CAPITAL ATHLETIC SHOWS JUST HOW TOUGH IT IS
The numbers simply do not lie. Through two weeks of inter-league matchups, the Capital Athletic is 10-1 and has outscored opponents 334-148, with an average margin of victory of roughly 16 points. If Rio Americano can get the victory at home against Pioneer tomorrow night, then the league will head into week 3 with five of their six teams undefeated.
Del Campo (2-0) defeated the Davis Blue Devils (0-2) 35-13 friday night. The Cougars are rolling along with superstar running QB Ryan Dimino leading a host of talented skill players on both sides of the ball. Del Campo may be the team to beat in the C.A.L. at this point.
Bella Vista (2-0) got themselves a shutout victory over the Mavericks of Mesa Verde last night. The Broncos offense was not as crisp as they were in their opener, with league leading QB Branden Lang throwing three interceptions. Although they were not too sharp this week, Lang and a talented group of skill players have shown signs of being one of the Section's best passing attacks. Lets not forget about the Broncos defense either. Led by linebacker Brandon Kellerman, this unit pitched a shutout on the heels of a stellar performance a week ago against Cordova.
Despite losing most of their Section Championship team from a year ago, Casa Roble (2-0) is still right there in the thick of things and just might have the defense to thwart Del Campo's league and section title hopes. Linebackers Justin Hayden, Dillon Markau and Clint Roberts, Safety Scott Patalano, and D-Linemen Houston Wilfley and Matt Griffin form the nucleus of the league's best defense. This talented group of guys shut down one of the best backs in the section in Woodcreek's James Nunley en route to a 23-7 Rams victory last week. Last night, they dominated a Vista del Lago team that was fresh off of a stunning upset victory over Napa, and the Rams rolled 26-6.
The Eagles of El Camino (2-0) are flying high after putting 35 points on the board and beating Cordova 35-26. El Camino has themselves a serious playmaker in blazing fast QB Quinn Peters. James Washington, Mike Sickle, and Myron Baldoz-McArn give Peters a few nice weapons to use as well. The Eagles offense can certainly score, but their defense has not been able to stop anybody yet. This will be a serious problem when it comes time to play some of the more high-powered offenses in the C.A.L.
The jury is still out on Mira Loma (1-1) and Rio Americano (1-0). The Raiders have a good shot of staying undefeated. They host a Pioneer team that is ailing after losing both their opener against Will C. Wood and their starting Quarterback. Mira Loma got themselves a nice win over San Juan 39-6.
