TIGERS CLAW THEIR WAY TO VICTORY

Thursday, September 17, 2009
@ The Grape Bowl, Lodi, CA

Two of week one's most dynamic offenses, Tokay (434 total yards) and Brookside Christian (745 total yards), squared off at the Grape Bowl in Lodi, CA last night. As expected, it was somewhat of an offensive shootout with both teams adding to their impressive offensive statistics for most of the game. In the fourth quarter, however, the Tigers dominated an exhausted Brookside Christian team on both sides of the ball to bring home the critical non-league victory.

This was a game of ups and downs where one minute you were ready to write one team off, and the next minute the other.

The Brookside Christian Knights received the opening kickoff and were crushed by the Tigers’ defense in three straight plays, forcing a punt. Tokay’s offense then shoved the ball right down Brookside’s throat on an 8 play, 49 yards drive that ended with six. The Tokay offensive line was so dominant on the opening drive that it seemed like they would not be stopped all night and the game could get out of hand.

Brookside Christian immediately put that theory to bed as their offense exploded to finish the first quarter. RB Shaquille Hill broke an 86 yard TD run on the Knights’ second possession, and 26 and 18 yard runs on their next two. Alex Lee, who finished the game with 11 catches for 136 yards, caught a pass and took it 27 yards for Brookside Christian’s second score, and then threw a 36 yard touchdown pass to fellow wide out Larry Fullard on a reverse pass to give the Knights a 20-6 lead. At this point Tokay did not seem to have an answer to the overwhelming athleticism they were facing and it seemed as if the Knights were poised to put 60 points on the board. Meanwhile, from an offensive standpoint, the Tigers were extremely sloppy in the second half of the first quarter, committing costly penalties, fumbling snaps and handoffs, and tripping on blades of grass.

Some spectators may have written the Tigers off at this point, but unfortunately for Brookside Christian, the Tigers themselves did not. On both sides of the ball Tokay seemed to focus more on the fundamentals in the second quarter. On defense the arm-tackling came to an abrupt halt, and as a result the Tokay defense was able to contain Brookside’s athletes and avoid the kind of big plays that killed them in the first quarter. Offensively, the Tigers stopped trying to be so fancy in their play calling and decided to run the ball right at Brookside, just like they did on the game’s opening drive. The Tokay offensive line man-handled Brookside’s smaller defensive group, and Tigers’ running backs Patrick McCarthy and Durrell Butler both scored touchdowns to cut the Brookside lead to 20-19 at the half.

At the start of the second half the Tigers got the ball and went back to the fancy stuff, killing their opening drive and digging themselves into a giant hole.

On their first play from scrimmage in the second half, the Tigers tried to run a reverse with WR Mike Pedraza; the result was a loss of 15 yards and the utter annihilation of their first drive. Brookside Christian got the ball in good field position and drove down into the red zone before the Tokay defense came up with a big stop. However, the Tigers gave the ball back and Brookside ended up scoring on their next drive, thanks in large part to a 29 yard run by Sophomore QB Tony Rodriguez. The Knights added the two point conversion and took a 28-19 lead half way through the third quarter.

From midway through the third quarter until the moment that the final whistle blew the big story was Tokay’s dominance on both the offensive and defensive lines. Defensively, the Tigers were able to sit back in coverage and get a ton of pressure on the QB while rushing just their front four. Defensive Linemen Daniel Munoz and William Gomez each recorded a sack and a half and Brookside Christian was unable to get the ball to their playmakers in open space.

Offensively, the Tigers offensive line pulverized Brookside’s front seven, wearing them down to the point where it was taking three or four defenders to bring down Tokay running backs Patrick McCarthy, Mike Hernandez, Durrell Butler and Andrew Richards.

The Tigers closed the gap to 27-28 late in the third on Andrew Richards’ five yard TD run and Mike Hernandez scored what would be the game-winner on his six yard run with just over six minutes to play. The Tigers’ defense held strong despite several ridiculous penalties called against them throughout the fourth quarter, and Tokay earned themselves a hard-fought and well-deserved victory.

BROOKSIDE CHRISTIAN LOOKS LIKE TEAM TO BEAT

Sept. 12, 2009

Coach LaTe'f Grim had his Knights ready for battle this week.  Brookside Christian's offense amassed 745 total yards (best in the section) and 64 points against an overwhelmed and overmatched Foresthill team.  The defense was equally impressive, although it really didn't have to be with all the offense Brookside was able to produce!

QB Tony Rodriguez threw for 307 yards and 4 TDs, while RBs Shaquille Hill and Alex Lee combined for 377 yards and 5 TDs on the ground.

Defensively, Brookside sacked Foresthill seven times, with two sacks each coming from Eric Davis, Eric White, and Jeff Coffield and one sack by Tre Somerville.  The defense also forced 3 turnovers, all of them interceptions.

While Brookside Christian certainly looked unstoppable last week, they will have to prove it against a tough Division I foe this week.  Tokay High School finished last season at 3-7 but returned most of their star players and looked amazing last week in a 54-7 drubbing of Bear Creek.  Brookside Christian will take on the Tigers this Thursday at the Grape Bowl in Lodi.
