WHERES THE DEFENSE?

October 16, 2009

It's hard to find an entire league full of team's that seem entirely indifferent to playing defense, but the Modesto Metro just might be one such league.  Only Grace-Davis and Johansen seem to even try to play defense, or see any value in doing so.  Still, even these two teams have had their defensive struggles and given up their fair share of points and yards.  For the rest of the Modesto Metro's teams, especially Beyer and Downey, defense is but an inconvenient side-effect of playing the game of football.  These schools would indeed be happiest playing in a passing league, seven on seven tournament all year long.  At the very best, these schools choose to follow a failed model for success and, at the worst, they neglect the fundamentals of the game in favor of putting together an offensive circus.  The non-league records compiled by these teams thus far this season provide the evidence; Grace-Davis, a running team that focuses its energy on ball control offense and fundamentally sound defense, is the only team with a winning record in a league full of soft, patty cake, circus offenses who throw more interceptions than they attempt running plays.

The very worst of the bunch is Downey High School.  Oh yeah, everybody knows who Downey high school is.  They are the team with the nation's eighth best quarterback (statistically), and two of California's very best wide receivers.  They are the media darlings of this season, with more coverage in local Modesto newspapers and television than any other school by far!  However, they are also a losing, 1-5 football team that has given up over 300 points in six games, by far the worst in the entire section.  The way that this team is glorified in the media is perhaps the most sickening thing that an old defensive player can possibly see, and it is a travesty that mediocre football players can be made into gods because of their fake, inflated statistics and a media infatuation.  I hate to put down anybody, and the players that I have singled out at Downey high school are decent football players...but they are not gridiron gods!  These kids will never play division one college football, and if they do, well it will be a travesty.  The main point here is that the style of football that is largely infecting the Modesto area is a losing style of football.  The fact that this league has gone 9-21 against other leagues that largely play another type of football is testament to this fact.
