MONSTER MATCH-UP: DELTA vs. BRADSHAW
October 20, 2009
Its the biggest game and biggest week of the season as far as the Sacramento Metro League is concerned. Its a match-up of offenses that have regularly reached 50 points and defenses that have allowed less than 100 points in six games. Its a match-up of teams that have brutally dominated all but one of their opponents. Its a battle for the league championship this weekend when Delta and Bradshaw Christian get together to do battle.
It is difficult to determine which team has the edge entering the game. Bradshaw Christian has annihilated everybody since losing to Summerville in the season opener with a devastating running game (475.67 yards/game) led by RBs Brady Dragmire (995 yards, 14 TD), Tyler Takahashi (769 yards, 10 TD), E.J. Eddinburg (544 yards, 6 TD) and Eric Osterman (218 yards, 3 TD). The rushing statistics are a blatant testament to the dominance of Bradshaw Christian's offensive line. Quarterback Daniel Lewis (20/31, 373 yards, 5 TD/2 INT) has been efficient, though seldom relied upon to pass, but things may be different against Delta this weekend.
The Delta Saints, meanwhile, have a much more balanced offensive attack, which may be to their advantage in such a big game. Quarterback Austin Blair (47/90, 701 yards, 7 TD/6 INT) has been impressive at times, but must limit the mistakes of a gun-slinging mentality if the Saints are to win this weekend. His main weapons are receivers Avery Trejo (15 rec, 257 yards, 3 TD) and Austin Daniels (17 rec, 277 yards, 2 TD). In addition to an effective passing game, the Saints have a dual-headed rushing attack led by RBs Raul Hernandez (730 yards, 12 TD) and Travis Reynolds (683 yards, 6 TD). Again, a dominant offensive line is largely responsible for their success. The biggest factor in this game will likely be the battle on the offensive and defensive lines. Both teams have dominated on both sides of the ball against lesser opponents, but something has got to give this weekend. If Delta can stop the Bradshaw Christian running attack by controlling the line of scrimmage, then victory is not just possible but likely, given the fact that the Pride do not like to throw the football. The ultimate winner of the battles up front will also be the winner of this game.
FORESTHILL FOOTBALL SHOWS SOME SERIOUS HEART
September 20, 2009
Just one week ago Foresthill's football squad was obliterated by an extremely talented Brookside Christian team 64-7. With an enrollment of under 200 kids, it is amazing the kind of talent-laden team that Brookside is able to field. Sophomore QB Tony Rodriguez has thrown for 488 yards in two games. Running back Shaquille Hill and wide receiver Alex Lee are lightning quick speedsters and Tre Somerville and Craig De Soto are two-way studs. All of these amazing athletes had a field day against Foresthill last week, and the party didn't stop until Brookside had scored 64 points and racked up a section-best 745 yards of offense.
When a defense gets beat up like that, it really takes a lot out of each and every player. Some teams are never able to recover, and give up the points rest of the season like Santa Claus gives presents. It takes an amazing group of kids to come back after a terrible defeat, put on some shoulder pads, strap on some helmets, and go back into battle with the confidence necessary for victory. Most high school squads cannot do it because high school squads are made up of kids who usually have not tasted defeat or failure or faced the kind of adversity that most adults have. We have all failed, or been defeated, or made terrible mistakes. It is just a part of life, and we deal with adversity as best we can, learn from our mistakes and failures, and work hard not to repeat them.
Perserverance in the face of adversity is a sign of true character, and we must all commend Foresthill's football team for what they did this weekend. It did not take weeks, or months, or years for this group of young men to recover from a devastating loss...it took them just seven days. Furthermore, they went from giving up the most yards in the entire section in week one to pitching a shutout! Right now, no matter what anyone may have to say, Foresthill is a .500 football team coming off of a big shutout victory. For your extraordinary display of heart and character, Foresthill football, we salute you!
