MARIPOSA, LE GRAND IMPRESS IN LEAGUE OPENERS
October 21, 2009
At 4-2, Turlock Christian looked to be the strongest team in the Southern League; Mariposa put an end to that farce with 42-0 blowout win over the Eagles.
New Mariposa QB Jarrett Leonard was the star of the game, throwing five touchdown passes, three of them to wide receiver Frankie Pena, including a 76 yard bomb to open up the scoring. He finished 7/10 for 164 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
The struggling Turlock Christian offense failed to move the ball much against a stingy Mariposa defense, gaining just 105 total yards of offense in this contest.
Le Grand, which entered the week at 1-4 like Mariposa, was equally impressive in their 40-7 win over Denair. These two contests turned the league upside down, as both Mariposa and Le Grand, at 1-4, looked to be non-threats in the league title race. Now, one would have to assume that next week's contest between Mariposa and Le Grand will have a profound impact on the title race; it may even be the biggest league game of the season!
TURLOCK CHRISTIAN SUFFERS FIRST LOSS, MARIPOSA GETS IN WIN COLUMN
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Turlock Christian looked like the team to beat heading into this week's matchup against Orestimba. At 2-0, Turlock Christian was the only winning team in the Southern League and had looked pretty darn good in victries over Big Valley Christian and Elliot Christian. The defense was playing well, allowing just 12 points in two games and an average of 231.0 yards per game, tops in the league. Meanwhile, TC's offense scored 53 points in two games. Quarterback Robbie Smallwood (240 yards, 5 TD/1 INT) and receiver Cody Alldrin (7 rec, 154 yards, 4 TDs) make up the very best passing combo in the league, and Turlock Christian will likely be able to outscore any other Southern league foe this year.
Coming into the week, TC knew that they had a tough matchup against a Orestimba team that was fresh off a 28-25 victory over another Southern League team, Mariposa. Although they were not impressive in week one, Mariposa is one of the heavy-hitters of the Southern League, and if Orestimba can beat them then they would no doubt be trouble for Turlock Christian as well. As it turns out, they were a little too much trouble for the Eagles, shutting down and frustrating their offense for most of the game in a 20-13 victory.
MARIPOSA 46, GUSTINE 21
Mariposa got in the win column with a 46-21 win over struggling Gustine. The Grizzlies (1-2) may be a far better team than their record suggests. Their week one loss against Truckee of Nevada is forgivable, especially since Colfax High School got beaten by them just as badly. Their week two, 25-28 heartbreaker against Orestimba (2-1) doesn't look so bad now that league leading Turlock Christian lost to them as well. The batle for this league championship should be quite interesting, as anybody could conceivably take it down.
DENAIR 28, SUMMERVILLE 45
Denair (1-2) is another of the Southern League frontrunners, but they had the unfortunate task of playing one of the deadly Mother Lode squads. The Summerville Bears (2-1) are a returning playoff team with tons of talent, and they showed it all off friday night. Although Denair amassed 371 yards of offense (179 yards of it by QB Codee Watts), they turned the ball over five times and could not stop Summerville themselves. Denair will try to get right next week as they take on Ripon Christian at home.
